DGDEN07
Portugese Trilobite Pair
Ogyginus forteyi
Arouca, Portugal
Lower Ordovician
13 x 18 inches each
In fossiliferous sedimentary stone, a fortuitous circumstance may occur in which a fossil, lying on the cleavage plane of a slab, is split in two, revealing two fossils in one. Here, both halves of an impressively large trilobite specimen are well-preserved in the richly colored, deep gray matrix of their locality. The famous Portuguese quarry in Arouca, which sporadically yields slabs of black slate with unique fossils, displays an unusual mineral replacement - the presence of numerous small iron pyrite crystals. The present trilobite specimen lived during the earliest epoch of the Ordovician Period, which extended from 490 – 460 million years ago. Trilobites, once dominant in the marine environment, were the first creatures on Earth to possess eyes.
