OBM06082010
Two Opalized Belemnites on Matrix
Order: Belemnoidia
Coober Pedy, Australia
Jurassic
5 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 2 1/2in; Largest specimen measures 3 1/2in
An exquisite and fascinating combination of fossil and gemstone, opalized belemnites are occasionally discovered in the opal fields of South Australia. The shells of the extinct squid-like marine cephalopod are geomorphically replaced by precious opal. Therefore they retain the shape of the once-living belemnite shell while also exhibiting the attributes of opal. The present exceptional specimens exemplify the variety of hue and play of color for which opal is prized. The larger specimen, arguably one of the finest in the world, boasts intensely deep blue and purple colors while the smaller specimen displays white with flashes of green, yellow and red.
